Hoyas: if you equate them with something grandma grew, its time to broaden your horizons

Article Abstract:

Hoyas are an interesting and varied hose plant known in Europe and the US since the 1700s despite their Southeast Asian Pacific Islands origin. The species is similar in some ways to Asclepias. H carnosa is by far the best known and most popular of the varieties, but more than 200 others are known. Among them are the Hoyas australis, obscura, guppyi, macgillivrayi, onyxoides, pubicalyx, meliflua, and obovata. More exotic and difficult hoyas include darwinii, compacta, lacunosa, mitrata, serpens, and imbricata.

Plant societies

Article Abstract:

Plant societies can help their members learn about many things in addition to the plants themselves. One society member has improved her understanding of geography, photography, and mathematics (to make measurements). Writing articles for, and editing, newsletters developed those skills, and the knowledge such groups brings can make reading more enjoyable. Groups with round-robin letters introduce members to people around the country and overseas, also an aid in stamp-collecting.
