Lawns provide space that turns into an extended room of a home because people like to spend time eating or playing on them. They are also a contrast to the landscape gardening that surrounds them. Aesthetically pleasing ground cover can provide low maintenance borders for the garden.

Article Abstract:

A garden that has sloping ground is both a physical and environmental challenge. The angle of the garden adds a visual dimension, especially if paths are used to create a dramatic effect. There is concern, however, for proper drainage and dirt slides from heavy rainfall.

Terraces, porches and decks provide choices in designs for structures that are used for seating areas or outdoor entertaining. Use rot-resistant wood such as West Coast redwood or East coast cedar. Native stone may be used to blend with the surroundings.
