Mulling over mulch

Article Abstract:

Commercial mulches may be more attractive and equally beneficial in preventing weeds and maintaining moisture levels, but they are not as ecologically responsible or as inexpensive as homemade mulch. While some companies do create organic mulches from telephone books, newspapers, and other recyclable materials, a homemade mulch can use the same ingredients. Grass clippings, fallen leaves, old carpet, and snow make fine mulches. Some plants can serve as living mulches because they suppress weeds and retain moisture. Avoid mulching with toxic or diseased plants.

The genetics of geography; getting the species right isn't always a guarantee of success

Article Abstract:

Getting plants to thrive is easier when using native plants. Even getting local plants to prosper can also be enhanced with by taking into account the provenance, or genotype of a specific plant within a particular species. Plants that are know to be hardy in numerous growing zones may grow better in areas where they originate.

Friend or phobia

Article Abstract:

Many people fear snakes, bats, frogs and toads and are startled when they find them in their garden, but in reality these animals are very beneficial. Snakes eat rodents, slugs and other pests and amphibians and bats eat hundreds to thousands of insects each day.
