On the genetics of lazy gardening

Article Abstract:

Lazy gardeners may be a combination of genetic and environmental influences. One parent might motivate children toward the labor-intensive activity gardening requires, while the other parent might foster a contemplative sense that encourages research in gardening encyclopedias and seed catalogs. The lazy gardener might represent a balance between an intense need for purpose and a desire for quiet and thoughtfulness.

Gardening in the redwoods

Article Abstract:

Gardens that are located in redwood forest regions can still support a variety of plants on the forest floor. By removing a few select limbs from the trees, gardeners can increase the level of filtered sunlight ideal for growing flora such as sorrel, violets, dogwood, calypso orchid, ferns, ivy and rhododendrons. These add interest without interfering with the forest environment.
