Pick of the phlox: new selections and old favorites that offer outstanding disease resistance

There are around 60-70 species of phlox, but some commercial strains are infested with eelworm, or are susceptible to red spider mites and powdery mildew. Gardeners should look for healthy varieties such as 'David,' 'Mt Fuji,' and 'Franz Schubert.'

The other onions: some alliums are much too pretty to eat

Most alliums have lilylike blossoms, but a few are rounded, bell-shaped or starry. They are hardy plants that prefer sun and well-drained soil and mix well in borders with other bulbs. Some varieties must be grown from seed.

Say YES to yarrows: the sturdy achilleas now come in a rainbow of colors

Yarrows, or achilleas, are study plants with a flat topped crown of flowers. They complement a mixed border with other flowers and will grow almost anywhere. Several varieties are described.
