Product claims: guidelines for evaluation

Article Abstract:

Consumers are increasingly skeptical of product claims because of communication problems between manufacturers and consumers. These problems arise because consumers misunderstand the claim's terminology, or because the claims are fraudulent or only partially true. Product claims can be objectively evaluated by analyzing the manufacturer's reputation, reviewing product testimonials and test results, analyzing the nature of comparisons made and attempting to understand new or unfamiliar terms.

Jewels in the crown

Article Abstract:

The Gulf, commonly known as the Persian Gulf, contains six ecologically-sound islands that escaped destruction from the 1991 Gulf War oil spill. The coral cay islands of Jurayd, Jana, Karan, Harqus, Kurayn, and Arabiyah provide breeding and areas for several species of marine turtles and terns. A joint European Union/Saudi Arabian study will help to devise a marine reserve management plan for the islands, which are still threatened by oil spills, fishermen, and tourists.

Beware the Litigant

Article Abstract:

The case of Bichler vs. Eli Lilly & Co. in May 1982 opened the door to cases related to science and technology that industry should be prepared for. Unsubstantiated or flawed scientific data should be refuted by well-prepared plaintiffs. The technical community must be prepared to show that the litigant's health fear is not reasonably supported by fact.
