Rural youth at risk: targeting through Teletip

Article Abstract:

Information on pre-natal care for pregnant teenagers was developed for use through Teletip, a telephone information system. A panel of teenagers was asked to help develop the system including the marketing mechanisms needed to disseminate the information effectively. The teenagers had definite ideas on how to educate their peers. They insisted on confidential information recommending that the posters be put up in restroom stalls in addition to other public places. The Teletip system proved to be an inexpensive and effective way of educating teenagers.

Building human resources through local organizations

Article Abstract:

An analysis of nonprofit local organizations (LO) which provide homeless families with housing yields helpful guidelines on starting a similar organization. A successful LO has the following qualities; it fills a genuine need, it must have achievable goals, it must have committed people and it must have the means and skills to achieve its objectives. Home economists have skills to lend to LOs such as extensive background in family development and housing needs, knowledge of human development and organization.

Meeting basic needs of rural Southern elders

Article Abstract:

The food, housing and clothing concerns of rural Southern elders and factors related to these concerns are analyzed. Profiles of rural Southern elders with the greatest concern for food, housing and clothing are derived. Itis noted that rural elders in the region believe they are worse in comparison with other elders they know. The implications of the study's results for families of these elders, food, housing and clothing professionals as well as home economists are discussed.
