Issues concerning the scientific and social implications of the genetic engineering of plants are examined. Topics include the advantages of genetic engineering, such as developing plants and trees resistant to disease and increasing food crops; difficulties in identifying genes; and the differences between traditional and genetic breeding.

When choosing plants for a garden, winter hardiness is a key consideration. The United States Department of Agriculture created the plant-hardiness zone map to classify plants and regions with various hardiness ratings. Gardeners should match up the rating of plants with the rating of their area.
