Snowed under

Article Abstract:

UK health trusts are anticipating pressure on services during the winter of 1998-99. The government announced in Nov 1998 that it was allocating an extra 250 million pounds sterling to the National Health Service (NHS) to be spent by the end of the year on co-operation with social services. However, many NHS trusts have experienced an unexpected surge in demand during 1998, they have an ongoing shortage of nursing staff, and the pressures on the ambulance service continue to increase. The trusts have had to make special plans to address the prospect of a cold winter or a flu epidemic.
