The primrose path: a beginner's guide to these beloved spring beauties

Article Abstract:

Primroses are found mostly in the gardens of the Northwest, but certain varieties are known to do well in Alaska as well as Arizona. They are easy to grow from seed and require extra humus in their soil to retain water and compost to 'buffer' the necessary pH.

A case for cold frames: extend the gardening season with these convenient tools

Cold frames enable cold climate gardeners to shelter seedlings and bulbs during the winter months. The frames are usually unheated boxes with no bottom with a translucent top that can transmit natural light and retain warmth.

Pulmonarias: decorative foliage extends the season of these spring bloomers

Article Abstract:

The genus Pulmonaria offers gardeners a plant that can flower as late as Christmas. The lungwort group of this plant can blossom in mid-winter and last until spring. Other varieties bloom in March and last until April.
