The rise & fall of Ellen Willmott

Article Abstract:

Willmott (1858-1934) was a British heiress who kept extensive gardens at her estate in Essex called Warley Place. She was particularly fond of roses and created an illustrated monograph of them. Her fortune diminished during her later years. Eryngium giganteum is also known as 'Miss Willmott's ghost.'

Confessions of a groundskeeper

Article Abstract:

A man describes the difference between a groundskeeper and a gardener. He is a groundskeeper at heart because he enjoys the weeding, trimming and mowing aspects of outdoor maintenance. His wife is more a gardener because she likes the planting and nurturing part of the process.

The rise and fall of grass: a short history of lawn mowing

Article Abstract:

The lawn mower was invented in 1832 after an English cloth factory worker discovered that the machine mechanism he created in 1830 for shearing velvet nap was applicable to cutting grass. Prior to this development, a scythe was used to cut grasses.
