The pleasures and memories of a large backyard are recounted, and their impact on daily living described. Although financial pressures may force the selling off of large plots, the argument remains that gardens serve a purpose not accountable in specifically economic terms. Once the land is sold, the peace of mind and relaxation associated with gardening is gone with it.

They include a top-drawer pullout dishwasher from Fisher & Paykel ($1,649), a faucet that gives filtered water via a button by Moen Pure Touch ($450), a refrigerator with elevating shelves by Jenn-Air ($1,499 to $2,090), and an oven that cooks twice as fast as a conventional oven by JetDirect ($5,220 to $5,730).
