Article Abstract:

Retail construction material and home center store have become leaders in the research and development of environmentally oriented products and are preparing to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Experts expect the increased global populations, depleted oil reserves and water shortages will necessitate new or revised products. The construction materials industry is planning photovoltaic circuitry that surpasses solar energy, alternative and synthetic building materials, other innovations and advances in recycling, waste material usage and other current environmental projects.

A series of home improvement projects have helped Charlotte, NC's Brad and Renee Simmons gain confidence as buy-it-yourself remodelers. On their first project, a kitchen makeover, they purchased flooring, hardware, cabinet wood, and stain. Brad shops mainly at Home Depot. The couple is in the midst of a re-siding project, and Brad appreciates Home Depot's ability to keep the siding they need in stock.

Customer service often affects remodelers' purchasing decisions, according to the 'Study of Remodelers, Part II' conducted by Hardware Age magazine. Perceived value has a significant influence on purchasing decisions and price continues to influence brand choice among contractors. Low interest rates have positively affected contractors' business.
