Vanishing natural heritage: wet flats

Article Abstract:

The wet flats of the southeastern US support an unprecedented variety of species in a small area, yet they are threatened by land development and efforts at rural fire control. As much as 97% of the Gulf Coast wet flats have been destroyed since 1897, according to one estimate. Some flats have been drained to create tree farms or crop land, while human control has interrupted the natural cycle of fires that keep the wet flats fertile and diverse.
