Article Abstract:
Israel designed the house to replace one that was destroyed during the 1991 firestorm in California's Berkeley and Oakland Hills. His client wanted the home to feel like a huge loft, the type often found in New York City. Israel chose a long, three-story stairwell to tie all the spaces together.
