Heilig-Meyers' acquisitions shake up list

Heilig-Meyers, the furniture retail giant based in Richmond, VA, entered the bedding specialty store business with the acquisition of Mattress Discounters and Bedding Experts in 1997. Mattress Discounters is the largest US bedding chain with 1997 sales of $220 million, while Bedding Experts had 1997 sales of $45 million. In Furniture Today's list of the Top 100 furniture stores, Mattress Discounters was ranked number 38, while Bedding Experts placed at 78th. At the end of 1997, Heilig-Meyers operated 174 Mattress Discounters stores and 51 Bedding Experts stores, all under the Mattress Discounters concept.
