The specialty boutique, which operates a 7,200-sq-ft retail outlet in Studio City, CA, chose children's furnishings over home office items in early 1998, a move that has been proven correct by recent events. Elements Furniture child-oriented home furnishings, which co-owner David Turner describes as less price-sensitive compared to other items, now accounts for 20% to 25% of the company's annual sales.

N.Y. contemporary retailer readies mail-order catalog

Totem Design Group of New York, a contemporary furniture seller, is introducing DSGN, its first mail-order catalog, on Oct. 10, 1998. The furniture retailer's catalog will be launched at its New York location in conjunction with the unveiling of a new product line from Karim Rashid of Pure Design. Total Design's DSGN, which will be supported by its new online ordering capability at the retailer's Web site, www.totemdesign.com, will also present profiles of designers, event coverages and other design-inspired stories.
