Mattress Giant buys N.H. chain

Article Abstract:

Mattress Giant has purchased Maximum Mattress of Bedford, NH, for an undisclosed amount. The purchase gives Mattress Giant a presence in the Northeast as the company intended to enter the area of Boston, MA, later in 1998. Maximum Mattress, which had estimated sales of $10 million in 1997, has four outlets in Massachusetts and eight outlets in New Hampshire. By the end of 1998, all of the outlets of Maximum Mattress will be changed to Mattress Giant outlets. Beginning in the fourth quarter of 1998, Mattress Giant would open a couple of outlets in New Hampshire and 12 outlets in the area of Boston, as announced by the company earlier.

Heilig-Meyers gets sleep chain for $43M

Article Abstract:

Heilig-Meyers Co has acquired Mattress Discounters through an all stock transaction worth $42.9 million. The acquisition has made Heilig-Meyers the largest bedding retailer in the country. The deal involved the issuance of 2,269,839 shares of Heilig-Meyers stock to Mattress Discounters shareholders. Mattress Discounters brought into the deal its 169 specialty stores and two bedding factories.
