In the housewares industry, there were more than 40 takeovers and acquisitions during the first seven months of 1983. Rather than indicating troubles in the industry, these corporate machinations are signs that business is picking up, and dynamic growth is expected. Towle Manufacturing Co. has been the most aggressive buyer, increasing holdings in tablewares and giftwares.

Changing layouts and decor: Sears tries out a dressy, new look

Sears has selected a few stores to remodel in a test to upgrade its image. Management surveyed customers for comments on what they like in department store layout, and then used the store-within-a-store arrangement. Analysts expect the changes to bolster Sears' image and to help Sears regain some of the market share it has been losing to specialty stores.

J.P. Stevens tests electronic retailing

J.P. Stevens is conducting an experiment with electronic merchandising. The Stevens Bed and Bath Fashion Center is a specially designed display. It includes a computer terminal, a video monitor, a CRT terminal, a laser disc player and printer. Consumers will be able to pick and order from the machine. Customer response to this will be researched.
