Simmons sales surge 20%: profits take hit

The first-quarter sales of Simons Co., a bedding major, increased nearly 20%, but net income tumbled 47% due to expenses related to its December acquisition by affiliates of Thomas H. Lee Partners. The company reported double-digit sales increase in both its wholesale and retail bedding segments.

A report of strong sales and customer traffic on Memorial Day weekend, by furniture retailers in the U.S. is presented. The reasons for the strong sales boosted by advertising and special promotional schemes provided by the retailers to consumers along with good weather are also discussed.

Katrina crushes business

Article Abstract:

Hurricane Katrina has stopped all furniture work in southern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Almost all furniture shops in New Orleans and along the coast of Mississippi are demolished. There can be no furniture work going on in this area for the fourth quarter of 2005.
