Sleep Train opens first of at least 20 SF stores

Article Abstract:

Sleep Train, a specialty store chain headquartered in Sacramento, CA, has opened seven stores in Bay Area, FL, and intends to open not less than 20 stores by the end of 1998. The completion of the Bay Area expansion will add more stores to Sleep Train, which runs a total of 23 stores at the end of 1997. The company that operates Sleep Train and Boxcar Bedding stores in Sacramento, Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, has posted $25 million in sales for 1997 and projects to generate a total of $40 million for 1998, according to President Dale Carlsen.

Calif. sleep shop giant emerges

Factory-direct bedding specialists Ortho Mattress Inc and W Simmons Mattress Co have merged and established a new furniture store firm called California Mattress. California Mattress is not a factory-direct location and is California's largest sleep shop chain. The two California licensees of Serta will supply the beddings, various Serta products and a private- label line.
