Sofa & Chair Co. closing

Article Abstract:

The Sofa & Chair Co., a seven-store, mid-priced retailer based in St. Louis, MO, is liquidating its assets after struggling with difficult conditions and a declining number of small, independent dealers. The company, which began liquidation on Aug. 21, 1998, specializes in selling custom-order upholstery. Sofa & Chair President Gene Holtzman cited complicated reasons for the closure of the company, which has been unprofitable for the past two years. The company's inventory is estimated to be $8 million to $10 million.
