The American housewife was the home apothecary or the family pharmacist of early America. She was the keep of herbal medicine chest which contained herbs, roots, seeds, flowers and barks from field, forest and garden. From careful memory or a stillbook, she concocted family remedies.

Landowners and garden aficionados during the colonial period have developed a fascination for knot gardens to grow herbs. While they may look complicated, knot gardens are easy to design. However, a knowledge about herbs and the different varieties to choose from is required.

Liberty teas of colonial America

Article Abstract:

The events that culminated in the Boston Tea Party of 1773 signalled the awakening of the American spirit in their fight against British colonialism. Americans made use of local substitutes for English tea derived from combinations of homegrown herbs and wild plants.
