For 2002, the top U.S. retail furniture stores averaged a growth rate of 7.4 percent. This article is the first in a series within this issue to document this and other changes within the industry.

Pier 1 Imports posted a rise of 29.1% in profits for the fiscal year ending March 1, 2003. The company also posted a 13.3% increase in sales for the period.
