A new university challenge for HR professionals

Article Abstract:

New legislation concerning further and higher education in UK is expected to increase employment of personnel professionals in universities. Although the 1988 Education Reform Act has already led to the doubling of personnel staffs in higher education institutions, 60% of surveyed principals in the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council sector reported that more employees are still needed. In addition, the Further Education and Higher Education Acts, designed to provide independence to further-education and sixth-form colleges, are expected to yet expand the need for personnel employees. Taken together, a total of 350 new full-time personnel positions will be created by 1994. A surge of part-time posts is likewise being predicted. A survey of personnel management in polytechnics and universities shows that recruitment, selection and employee relations are the main tasks performed by personnel staff in such institutions.
