A sample policy

Article Abstract:

The formal personnel policies enacted at Bank of America in San Francisco relative to the AIDS crisis are reprinted with Bank of America's permission. These policies, effective since October 1985, include the following provisions: (1) confidentiality of employees with life-threatening illnesses is of paramount importance, (2) employees seeking information about any life-threatening illness are instructed to contact the personnel department, (3) reasonable accommodations for the continued employment of employees with life-threatening diseases will be made, although these employees will not receive 'special consideration', (4) continued employment is therapeutically beneficial to employees with life-threatening illnesses, and (5) employees can be referred to community agencies involved with counseling people concerned about life-threatening illnesses.

Teach employees to approach retirement as a new career

Article Abstract:

The worker's identity is mostly the result of the career and retirement can be an occasion for an identity crisis. Transamerica Occidental Life Insurance Co. has a comprehensive retirement education program for its workers who are near the retirement age. Though the typical employee who will retire is mostly concerned about personal finances, there are many other considerations, such as activities, new opportunities, and possibly new housing alternatives.
