Concertational and free-market paths to successful territorial economic adjustment: Labour unions and adjustment in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

Successful industrial adjustment at local levels is believed by some researchers, to reflect the capacity of unions and management to identify problems and implement solutions co-operatively, through a micro-concertation process. The processes of industrial adjustment in a variety of textile, clothing and footwear centres in northern and central Italy, that have been successful, are examined. It was observed that both micro-concertational and free-market models of successful adjustment exist, and it is argued that successful micro-concertational adjustment is more likely where unions are strong and united.

Unions, safety committees and workplace injuries

Article Abstract:

Recent research has used the Workplace Industrial Relations Survey of 1990 (WIRS3) as a basis for assessing the determinants of workplace injuries from a range of manufacturing concerns in the UK. It has particularly focused on assessing the role of union-appointed safety representatives and joint health and safety consultative committees in cutting down the number of workplace accidents. It was found that companies with joint consultative committees have seen a fall in the number of workplace accidents.

Governing the workplace

Article Abstract:

Considerable attention is being given by employers and academics to the question of the future of employee organisation in the workplace as traditional labour unions lose power. Some observers believe that institutional forms of employee organisation will soon fade away, while others feel that they still have a role to play. It is widely assumed that the design of governance institutions should include both participative and representative requirements, but this may not necessarily be the case.
