Eastland invests in untapped resources

Article Abstract:

Eastland Bank (Woonsocket, RI) implemented an employee recruitment and training program designed to attract qualified applicants for teller and clerical positions, and to comply with the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977. The CRA requires regulated financial institutions to help fulfill the credit needs of their local communities, including moderate- and low-income areas. Human resources professionals at Eastland received assistance from the International Institute of Rhode Island in setting up a program that focused on recruiting and training Southeast Asian immigrants. Eastland received financial aid from the Northern Rhode Island Private Industry Council. The program's goals included recruiting qualified Southeast Asian applicants, offering vocational English as a second language, and improving the English and math skills of participants. Testing following the program determined that English skills, math skills, and knowledge of bank terminology and procedures improved.

Customer service focus prompts employee exchange

Article Abstract:

Eastman Kodak Co and First Chicago Corp held an employee exchange program that enabled Kodak to better understand the banking industry and gave First Chicago a means of providing user requirement information to a technical equipment company. John Herman and Vince Bates were the participants in the exchange program for Kodak and First Chicago, respectively. Herman was treated as an employee with special priviledges and duties at First Chicago while Bates was considered a regular employee who could provide valuable insights to Kodak's product planning department. A problem encountered by Bates during the program was the acquisition of confidential information regarding his company's competition. A conversation in a high-level management meeting by regional VP Mike van der Kieft of Kodak and senior VP Don Hollis of First Chicago started the exchange program.

Relationship marketing is based on dialogue between suppliers and customers

Article Abstract:

Eastman Kodak Co and First Chicago Corp held an employee exchange program that enabled Kodak to better understand the banking industry and gave First Chicago a means of providing user requirement information to a technical equipment company. The exchange program was the result of a relationship marketing effort by VP Mike van der Kieft of Kodak who sought out Sr VP Don Hollis of First Chicago who has gained the reputation of being an innovator in the banking field. Relationship marketing advocates a thorough understanding of the operations and infrastructure of a client and the development of a two-way information flow for customer development. This enables a company to orient its products and services to specific customer requirements that are often superior to other commercially-available services or products.
