Economic and political climate

Article Abstract:

The inclusion of the German Democratic Republic in the Federal Republic of Germany increased the latter's population by 16.5 million and led to a significant rise in consumer demand which cannot be met by local firms alone. This situation indicates that Germany still needs foreign capital and an open world market that will allow the country to increase its export capacity to take advantage of the appreciation of the Deutschmark against the currencies of its major trading partners.
