Employee-directed investments: viewing sponsor and participant involvement

Article Abstract:

Choosing the right investment mix is the most critical element in ensuring favorable overall fund returns particularly in employer sponsored savings plan. However, proper selection and asset allocation is the one problem which should be overcome by both employee participants and employers themselves. Proper education and guidance on investment decisions and options will help participants make the right decisions thus, avoiding high investment risks and ensure successful returns in investments .

Opportunities for employers offering participant DCs

Article Abstract:

Employers' fiduciary resposibilities in participant-directed individual account plans are governed by Section 404(c) of the ERISA. Employers must all allow participants to choose among diversified investment alternatives and continuously monitor and provide informations on the offered alternatives. They may appoint an independent trustee to see if employees are choosing good investment alternatives.

'Look before you leap' and participant communication

New regulations from the Labor Department require companies to provide sufficient communications to employees on matters regarding retirement and pension plan options. The communications issue highlight companies' needs and priority under the law for updating investment communication policies. Plan demographics include age level, educational background and employees' socioeconomic status.
