Extending beyond borders: multinational companies and the international management of labour

Article Abstract:

Transnational management forms are developing as is shown by a study of international companies operating in the UK. This development is uneven and there are variations according to type of multinational firm. International companies are more likely to monitor labor performance if they have a global approach. Pressure on workforces in different countries are likely to become more intense as work forces are compared, Labor unions are faced with a challenge and the need to gather information at international levels.

Recent research has focused on developing a model for evaluating how strategic choices are being made. This model draws on the private sector, but it was found that it must be refined and extended to take into account the particular characteristics of the public sector.
