Fighting racism and union-busting in South Carolina: interview with Ken Riley

Article Abstract:

This article provides an interview with political activist and union member Ken Riley over the January 2000 dispute between a steamship operator and Charleston, South Carolina dockworkers union Local 1422, over the hiring of replacement workers for a fraction of the wages and benefits of striking union members. The attorney general of the state, Charles Condon, dispatched over 600 military personnel to intervene, which lead to a melee and the serious injury of union members by the armed personnel; the attorney general then indicted five union members on charges of criminal rioting.

Coming together: promise and pitfalls of Minnesota's corporate-accountability campaigns

Article Abstract:

The article examines Minnesota's 1999 Coporate Subsidy Accountability law as an emaple of the growing movement for standards in corporate subsidies. The author examines the activist movement which proceeded this law and its concerns over living wage and subsidy abuse; the evolution of the grass-roots efforts of labor unions and communities and their influence over legislative action are highlighted.

Economic development for whom? Labor gets involved in Massachusetts's economic development

Article Abstract:

This article discusses labor unions' relationships with communities in Massachusetts in their collective efforts to determine policies effecting local economic development. The authors explore why unions are becoming involved in states' economic decisions, the experience of economic development coalitions, and the role of the state federation in fostering this activity.
