Should management development just be for managers?

Article Abstract:

A study of 150 UK organizations was conducted to determine the best management development practices. The study, which was funded by the Training Agency and conducted by the Ashridge Management Research Group, has revealed that when new company cultures were introduced, developmental learning took place through the efforts of all employees and contributed to innovative approaches to development. Many of the companies used total quality management (TQM) as an employee development technique. TQM emphasized team building and joint responsibility, and redefined management and employee development as a group activity involving the whole company.

Portrait of today's young generation

Article Abstract:

The results of the International Centre for Child Studies' Youthscan UK project can help human resources personnel understand young workers' motivations and expectations. Youthscan, which has periodically studied the characteristics of 15,000 people born in 1970, has already provided information about such factors as career preferences. Human resources personnel can use information about the subjects' achievements in life to evaluate their achievement potential in their organizations.
