Furore over plant closures

Article Abstract:

Trade unions representatives across Spain are livid over the announcement that two multinational companies, Philips and La Garriga propose to close their operations in Catalonia while the Korean company Samsung plans closure of one of its units at Palau-solita i Plegamans. Authorities have however asked Samsung to deposit the amount received as grants from the local government before effecting closure and there are an increasing number of calls to make closure more difficult.

Globalization and migration on ILO conference agenda

Article Abstract:

The International Labour Conference met in June 2004. At the annual conference an action plan on migrant workers has been adopted, a new instrument on human resources development has also been approved and the report on the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization was also elaborately debated.
