Germany: the support fund and its renaissance

Article Abstract:

The support fund system for financing employee benefit schemes in Germany is described. The circumstances surrounding the reemergence of this type of financing vehicle are briefly discussed as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the support fund system. According to a recent employee benefits survey in the country, the support system is the second most popular method for funding pension benefits, with 15% of employers preferring this financing vehicle.

Issues concerning the policy on cash payments for expatriate staff adopted by The World Bank are discussed. The reasons for the changes, the costs to the company and benefits and disadvantages of the new system are examined.
