Handling anger by reducing its cause

Article Abstract:

Recognizing and redirecting anger and frustration at work can diminish negative emotions and convert them into problem-solving actions. The first technique is to step back and analyze why the negative feelings are there. Then it is necessary to break the feelings and the behaviors up into smaller, more manageable units. Negative feelings that cannot be changed should be simply dropped. Behaviors that can be changed should be subtly modified one step at a time. Too much change is too much to be expected, but some small behaviors can be altered. The best way to achieve behavior modification is to reward any small, favorable change that is made. Some of the bigger, more difficult problem behaviors may then be addressed, accompanied by firm warnings.

Four leadership styles and eight combinations of these are described. Style 1 has a conceptual decision-making orientation. Style 2 has a practical or managerial orientation. Style 3 has a traditional decision-making orientation. Style 4 is characterized by inspired thinking and impulsive action. Styles 1 and 3 cannot be found in one person, nor can 2 and 4. However, Styles 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 4, and 4 and 1 may be combined.
