UK stereo retailer Richer Sounds has used unusual personnel management techniques to create a corporate culture of highly-motivated employees. Absenteeism, theft, and turnover are low at the 27-store chain, while morale is high. A popular employee suggestion program, numerous company awards, rent-free vacation homes, paid time-off for charitable volunteer work, and an employee representative system are all part of the Richer Sounds approach. A detailed communications structure, process improvement groups, employee surveys, and a hardship fund are other features of the company.

Talking shop: J. Sainsbury's new works councils

Article Abstract:

The British retailer J. Sainsbury has set up works councils covering all of its 140,000 employees and these have improved the communications between management and employees. The councils have kept management informed of staff concerns and suggestions and may become a model for a European Works Council if the idea expands to other countries in the European Union. Topics the councils will discuss include store performance, local competition, new technology and equal opportunities. Response has been positive.

Lean organizations may verge on anorexic

Article Abstract:

Corporate downsizing may have made many companies leaner but not necessarily more competitive. A 1996 UK report indicates leanness has become an accepted management objective, but it often is an ineffective strategy due to inattention to employee morale, motivation, and involvement. Leanness can only be a successful strategy when accompanied by proactive dynamic management that involves employees in decision-making and promotes responsibility and flexibility.
