How TRW unified its decentralized personnel system

Article Abstract:

The conversion to a unified, automated personnel system at TRW Inc., which has 93,000 employees and 100 operating units worldwide, is described. The development of the microcomputer-based personnel management system began with a 31-page questionnaire disseminated to all U.S. operating units of TRW. The findings allowed system planners to identify the common data needs of all the subsidiaries and to assess the hardware and software requirements. The system selected is based on the Personnel Management System marketed by Tesseract Corp. of San Francisco. The planning and implementation processes are described in detail.

The results run across company size and industry, though they do not signify that each personnel function in each personnel department has been automated. The results do mean the use of some computer, such as a personal computer, a minicomputer, or a microcomputer, is now coming into widespread use.
