How businesses search for qualified applicants: trying to bridge the skills gap

Article Abstract:

The diminishing supply of skilled labor is becoming a major problem for companies. A survey conducted by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) revealed that five out of every six applicants get rejected mostly because they lack the necessary skills to meet the the requirements of the jobs they are applying for. The survey, which involved 360 NAM member companies, also revealed that accute shortages of skilled labor are being felt throughout the US, particularly in hourly job classifications. The most common strategy used by companies to cope with the labor and skills shortage is retraining. Some 55% of the surveyed companies said that they provide retraining programs for their current workers. Other common strategies for coping with the skilled labor shortage were found to include offering incentives for employee referral and recruiting workers from non-traditional sources.

In Search of Motivation

Article Abstract:

The problem of motivating employees is of crucial importance to nearly all managers. The two methods usually used are rewards and threats. Neither of these methods are successful in the long run. The secrets of motivation are contained within the individual employee and have to do with such characteristics as ability, tolerance for frustration, self-esteem, and needs. Companies need to realize that balance of these factors in an individual will largely determine the degree of his motivation toward a particular job. In other words, match the job to the person. The second most important thing is supervisorial skill in elicting motivation rather than demanding it.
