Job training shows youth how to apply knowledge

Article Abstract:

A partnership between Sears Roebuck & Co, the DuPage Area Occupational Education System and the National Alliance of Business has resulted in the creation of an apprenticeship program whose goal is to facilitate the entry of high-school students into the labor force. The Quality Connection apprenticeship program is part of efforts to respond to the needs of the 'Forgotten Half,' referring to the 20 million working high-school graduates under the age of 25. The program is available to any junior or senior student at 22 area high schools in DuPage County, IL. Apprentices are taught mechanical and electrical theories during the first semester and are required to the hands-on training and a mentoring program at a Sears Service Center during the second semester. The second year is devoted to training in air-conditiong and heating. At the end of the program, apprentices receive a Certificate of Achievement which lists all their acquired marketable skills.

Benefits leverage hiring and retention efforts

Article Abstract:

The coffee roaster and retailer Starbucks Corp offers one of the most desirable benefit package in the country. Its stock option program, called Bean Stock, is unheard of in private companies. Through Bean Stock, all of its 2,000 workers, including part-time employees, are provided the chance to stake their share of the company's profits through stock ownership. Aside from this, employees may also avail of the 401(k), a salary-reduction savings plan, after one year of joining Starbucks. Medical and dental insurance, on the other hand, are available to employees after 90 days on the payroll. The exceptional benefit plan of the company is made possible by top management support, especially that of Pres and CEO Howard Schultz, and the continuing growth of the company. The benefits prove to be an advantage to the company as well. The benefits attract highly talented people and contribute to the high rate of retention.
