The changing face of Hungary

Article Abstract:

The Hungarian government's decision to privatize in 1989 enticed foreigners to invest in the country. Privatization, however, resulted in unemployment, which required the government to pass laws and to provide training programs for the benefit of out-of-work employees. Employment agencies also started operating to help job-seekers find work and have access to skills training programs. Wage reforms and changes in the Labour Code and Social Security rules were also effected to protect the interests of both employers and employees.

M&A's: is the employee rights directive in tune with the changing realities?

Article Abstract:

The 1977 Transfer Directive was established by the European Union (EU) to safeguard the rights of the employees of companies involved in mergers and acquisitions. The terms of employment signed by the company and the employee at the time of hiring will be honored by the buying company at the time of the acquisition. The Transfer Directive not only protects employee rights but safeguards the buying company by maintaining job requirements and obligations. Protection covers all employees including part-time and temporary contracts.

Compensation and benefits in Ukraine: changing concepts in a changing environment

Article Abstract:

The privatization of various industries in Ukraine underscores the need for new employee compensation and benefit plans that would stem the decline in the workers' standard of living. However, these plans should not serve as an obstacle in the companies' effort to attain competitiveness. They should also be implemented together with a pension fund legislation that will improve their effectiveness.
