Milestones for the personnel department

Article Abstract:

County NatWest Ltd's personnel department was asked to define five-year strategic milestones as part of a company-wide program to reinforce accountability. The milestones were to be used as a measure of its performance by the agreed target dates. The investment bank's personnel department accomplished the task by reexamining the strategic impact of the human resource (HR) function. Three studies from HR literature shaped the approach adopted. It was decided that the milestones should focus on the pivotal HR function of developing supply-led capability. A total of 18 distinct strategic milestones were formulated with the aim of improving: organizational effectiveness, professional skills, and business integration.

On-the-job training: a costly poor relation

Article Abstract:

Research by the Training Commission on employee training in Great Britain shows that on-the-job training accounts for half of all training. The research also indicates that employers can gain benefits by increasing the efficiency of training programs by: recognizing the importance of on-the-job training; integrating on-the-job training with other training methods; and assuring that trainers are well qualified. Case studies of successful training practices at J Sainsbury PLC, The Tussauds Group, and Wardenstar International are included.

Recruiting and retaining the quality yuppie

Article Abstract:

County Natwest Bank has been attempting to recruit high quality 'yuppies' to its organization. Deregulation of the financial industry has helped the bank grow, requiring greater numbers of people in a larger number of areas. To recruit yuppies, an institution must have a good image, good pay and bonus structure, and an attractive team with which to work. The bank used radio and newspaper advertising as well as employment agencies to attract applicants.
