New ways to perform appraisal

Article Abstract:

A survey of British employers' use of formal performance appraisal schemes showed that the main reason to introduce such schemes was to identify training needs and improve individual and corporate performance. The introduction of a competency-based framework was the most frequently reported recent change to appraisal schemes. Three-quarters of the schemes in the sample of organizations applied to all workers, with downward and self appraisal the most popular, while the use of upward and peer-level appraisal was still relatively uncommon.

Unions take action to improve women's representation

Article Abstract:

A 1997-98 study by Britain's union research organization Labour Research Department notes that the increase in female union members is not entirely reflected in the numbers of women in senior union positions. The study highlights the steps some unions are taking to increase the numbers of women in senior positions. Women constitute 41% of members in the ten unions surveyed, with a total of 5.2mil members.

Predicting union membership

Article Abstract:

Research shows that workers' attitudes to work and personal characteristics influence union density. Gender plays a part, with women less likely than men to join trade-unions. Age is another factor, with younger workers being less interested in unions Post-secondary education and high salaries are other positive influences for unions.
