Part-time working: a survey

Article Abstract:

A 1997 UK survey found most companies used part-time staff as a way of increasing flexibility. Clerical jobs were the most common use of part-timers, although 50% of the companies surveyed had part-time management personnel as well. The survey found a broad range of definitions for part-time employment, ranging from 16 to 39 weekly hours. Almost 25% of those surveyed said many of their part-timers were actually former full-time employees. The survey found a large employee demand for part-time hours. Employers cited logistics in arranging company meetings as one of the main problems in using part-timers.

A survey of permanent health insurance

Article Abstract:

A survey of UK employers indicated a variety of approaches in offering permanent health insurance as protection against long-term disability. Most companies' plans featured eligibility waiting periods. A few specifically excluded illnesses or restricted eligibility to upper management. Most paid 50% of salary in case of illness or disability. Benefit escalation rates and rising premium costs were also cited.
