Pay for a global work force

Article Abstract:

Alternative compensation systems that focus on the work expatriates perform in their host countries in order to determine appropriate allowances can provide companies with a means to ensure that those employees fit in financially with their peers who work at the same location. The key features of alternative systems include the replacement of cash payments with payment-in-kind whenever possible, the use of one cost-of-living table to determine allowances for all expatriates in the same host country, and one worksheet to calculate compensation. The steps that should be taken in applying an alternative pay system after identifying the expatriates' names, job titles, home-bases salaries, and locations include determining the job title and salary range to be used as a basis for host location values, identifying cost of living expenses in the host location, and moving expenses to the host location.

The career couple challenge

Article Abstract:

One of the greatest challenges facing multinational firms is the selection of executives for overseas assignments, and this task is even more difficult if the executives are part of a dual-career couple. Fewer employees are willing to relocate without receiving some type of employment assistance for their spouse. A survey of 144 multinational firms conducted by Organization Resources Counselors Inc has indicated that nearly 79% of the expatriate employees were married males accompanied by their families. The relocation procedures being followed by multinational firms include providing career planning and life planning counseling services, offering job-hunting trips, providing intra-company employment opportunities, and giving short-term assignments to employees if another solution to the relocation of a spouse cannot be found.
