Positive discipline

Article Abstract:

Union Carbide has pioneered a human resource management policy of positive discipline that is based on the idea of having progressively more intense contacts with employees when work problems are identified. Positive discipline removes the tendency to quickly revert to punishment to get employees to change negative behavior and adhere to performance standards and creates a system for assuring justice within the organization and consistency in dealing with individual employees. In addition, the system recognizes the positive contributions of employees. Positive discipline attempts to address problems by offering coaching and counseling and allows input from the employee in order to further employee commitment. Positive discipline is based on a system of actions escalating in seriousness: oral reminders to change performance or behavior, written reminders, and one-day paid disciplinary suspensions, so-called decision-making leave, in which the employee decides to change undesirable behavior and reach performance standards or quit. The system requires management training, a system of employee communication, management commitment, and feedback.
