Professional answers to career questions

Article Abstract:

A personnel manager with fifteen years of experience complains that his job search following a layoff took a seemingly unreasonable amount of time to complete. Personnel managers are advised that U.S. businesses are in general reducing the number of middle management positions throughout their organizations and that consequently job searches may be more frequent and more difficult to complete. In addition, the individuals with whom job seekers must apply for employment have other duties to perform as well, and these 'internal' duties will generally receive a higher priority. Job seekers and personnel managers reviewing applicants are advised to cooperate with each other and to attempt to understand the pressures involved on both sides of the job search process.

Master the art of influence

Article Abstract:

Middle managers who want to work effectively with senior-level executives and high-powered people, and learn the arts of persuasion and negotiation should first determine their existing interpersonal relations skills, then build on their strengths and mitigate their weaknesses. The ways to develop new skills include reading books on how to enhance interpersonal skills; using personal coaches including organizational psychologists, and business or communications school faculty consultants, and outplacement firms; and attending classes or seminars.

Career counselor

Article Abstract:

There are three inexpensive recruitment sources: advertising, anonymous referral, and worker referral charges. Advertising in the city newspaper is efficient due to individual dismissals and wide cuts in personnel. Professional organizations may provide a big contact data base.
