Demise of "permanent employment" in Japan

Article Abstract:

Large Japanese corporations have responded to increased industrial competition by shifting from the traditional system of permanent employment to a system that allows for more flexible employment practices. The permanent employment system, in which workers are typically guaranteed a job in a company until retirement, has been eroded by such factors as the rising cost of labor and increased overseas investment by Japanese firms. Flexible employment practices adopted by Japanese companies to cope with fluctuating labor needs include early retirement, outplacement, mid-career recruitment, subcontracting and increased hiring of women and foreign graduates.
