The price tag on turnover

Article Abstract:

The high cost of employee turnover is a major factor in the decline in the competitiveness of US firms and their poor productivity. The costs of turnover include both visible and hidden costs. Visible costs include recruitment, relocation, and advertising, and the hidden costs include the inefficiency of departing and incoming employees and employees associated with the inefficient employees. Two studies of employee turnover reveal that turnover costs account for an average of 1.5 times the annual salary of the position, and that it takes 13.5 months for a new employee to maximize their efficiency. The hidden costs of employee turnover account for a minimum of 80% of turnover costs.

Strategic staffing for the '90s

Article Abstract:

The increasing availability of skilled temporary employees has presented human resources (HR) professionals and line managers with an expanded range of options to consider in solving staffing problems in the 1990s. The steps HR professionals may have to take to introduce the concept of hiring skilled temporary employees include dispelling myths about temporary workers among line managers; including segments of flexible staffing in orientation sessions for new managers; and including segments on mixing permanent and temporary employees in quarterly education sessions for senior management.
