All of its personnel undergo thorough training, from cashiers to executives, using internal training programs as well as local college and university programs. Employees have regular appraisals. There are four groups of employees: management, non-management retail, non-management clerical and administrative, and manual workers in distribution and security. Each of these levels has a different pay structures. Company fringe benefits include a profit-sharing plan, a pension plan, a health plan, and life insurance. Douglas Smith

Article Abstract:

Douglas Smith is the new chairman of Great Britain's Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS). Smith brings the perspective of a civil servant to ACAS rather than that of an industrial relations practitioner. The chair's role has not been sharply defined by law, practice, or custom, but in the past this individual has played a critical role in resolving disputes. Smith's prior education and experience are described.
